Look, I love my iPhone. Really. Not as much as my wife, my kids, or my cats, but it’s right up there with my Jeep. But even I get a little tired of the dozens of news stories spawned by a rumor of something that we all know is coming anyway.
Today the Internet was all abuzz because some mysterious photo popped up of an iPhone with a glossy black back. “Is this the next iPhone?” everyone asked. No. It’s not.
I haven’t heard that officially, but come on. Do you really think that Apple would let photos out of the next device? If so, don’t you think that about 43 lawyers would have been all over the distributors of said photo? To me, this looks like either a nice Photoshop job or possibly a Colorware-like modding of the existing iPhone.
Either way, it’s pretty but not very practical. I LIKE the metal back on my iPhone. It’s very scratch resistant and provides a sturdy feel to something that costs more than my first car. They probably will change the design somewhat for the next iPhone but I think going to a glossy finish such as pictured would be a mistake.
The new iPhone is coming…and soon. Apple and AT&T both have claimed that 2008 will see the 3G version. And AT&T execs just leaked a day or two ago that their entire smartphone lineup will be 3G “within months”. Is the iPhone a smartphone? Well, that’s another blog post.
But the next iPhone, this is not. Get a grip (or a LIFE), people.

I would frankly be more concerned that Steve Jobs is designing phones that look like the coffin they used to launch Spock into the Genesis planet. It bodes ill, Kevin. It bodes ill.
