Downloading the iPhone SDK…slowly

21 Apr

One thing that I DEFINITELY will be installed on the Mac is the iPhone SDK.  I’m downloading it right now – and it says that it will only take another 7 HOURS and 31 MINUTES!  I feel like I’m on dial-up again!

I wonder if they are hosting the file on a Mac server….

WPhone

18 Apr

I’m using a new-to-me piece of software to post this blog entry. It’s a great WordPress plugin that allows you to control just about everything on your blog from your phone.

I’m excited to see how well this works as this is one reason that I decided to host my own blog. Here goes….

Is Steve Jobs brainwashing me?

16 Apr

First, it was an iPod.  Then, an updated one.  Then, an iPhone.  And another.  And two Shuffles….

And NOW:  I just ordered a Mac Mini!

It’s actually a somewhat practical purchase (at least that’s what I’m telling my wife!).  I’ve thought about getting a second computer for my desk for quite some time.  A desktop that would stay there while I use my laptop to go back and forth.  Turns out, a Mac makes a ton of sense.

I can use it to learn the Mac OS which I haven’t used in about 8 or 10 years.  Since we’re going to be offering managed services soon, this will give me an opportunity to learn the OS and to see how it operates in a predominantly Windows-based network.  That way, when the three clients we may have with Macs have a question, we won’t stare blankly at them.  At least not for that reason!

Next, I have been curious about toying with the iPhone Dev kit.  Not that I have a ton of great, money-making ideas for the platform or anything, but it would be fun to check things out.  And who knows, I must just create the next great app for the iPhone.

But here is probably the best part of getting a new Mac as my desktop PC – it’ll run Windows, too!  I’m going to use Boot Camp to run Windows XP Pro on the Mini.  Of course, I don’t expect it to be a speed demon or anything (it’s only a 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo with 2GB of RAM – as soon as I upgrade it), but it should be a nice addition to our network.  Take that, Steve!

BTW, if you see a little metal box with flashing lights and an Apple logo on the back of my neck, please let me know.

Going back to school!

12 Apr

Kinda.

I just signed up for an online course to prepare for the CompTIA Network+ certification.  It starts this coming Wednesday and I should be able to pass the exam by early June.

I’ve been interested in obtaining a few certifications for a while now but have never really focused on it.  We’ve been talking about beginning to offer managed services at Backslash for several months and are just now starting to test some products.  I figured it was a good idea to brush up on the basics and fill some holes that my self-teaching has created over the years.

Several years ago, I became a CompTIA A+ Certified Technician and Network+ certification is pretty much the next step.  Who knows, I may work on other certificates after this.

I’m looking forward to starting “classes”.

Two-way Twitter action!

10 Apr

Okay, now I have Twitter Updater to post new blog entries to Twitter AND the Twitter Widget to display tweets on my blog.

Two-way Twitter bliss has arrived!

Twitter Updater works!

10 Apr

Well, I finally found a Twitter plugin that works with WordPress 2.5!  Now, when I write a new blog post, a tweet is automatically sent out with a link to the new post.

Now, if I could just get my tweets to show up on my blog….

They’ll have to be in a sidebar or something because if I use one of those automated “tweet to blog entry” tools I’ll be stuck in a infinite loop.  Blog something, Twitter is updated, tweet is published as entry, Twitter is updated, tweet is published as entry, Twitter is updated, tweet is published as entry………

You get the idea!
