I’ve been a fan of Lockergnome for a long time, and even knew Chris Pirillo when we both went to the University of Northern Iowa. We weren’t best friends or anything, but he did hang out at the computer lab a lot (go figure) and I was a lab supervisor (also, go figure). We talked here and there, mainly about computers, and I enjoyed the conversations even though I found him a bit hyper.  =)  A few years later, I was surprised to see him online. I even attended a few Gnomedexes in Iowa and Lake Tahoe. Chris has done a ton of stuff since UNI and is now known internationally as a geek’s geek.

First off, I really don’t consider myself a “coder.” Most of the time, I can look through a Javascript or PHP script and manipulate it to my liking, but I’ve only dabbled with creating my own code. I’m more of a web developer if anything. So, I was a little hesitant to go to camp. Less than an hour and a half drive and the awesome price of free convinced me that it was worth my Saturday.

For anyone that hasn’t been to a code camp, there are no tents or firewood involved. Basically, it’s a conference with a keynote and tons of breakout sessions. I chose the following topics:

All of the presenters did a great job and I couldn’t believe how much I learned. My favorite, of course, was the WordPress session as I was able to understand it best. It filled in a lot of gaps for me and sparked my interest in developing new themes, which is pretty much what the code camp is designed to do, I’m guessing.

In many of the conferences I’ve attended, the discussions between sessions are often as helpful as the presentations themselves. The same was true with Iowa Code Camp. For example, I was able to talk with Kenny and Andy for a while before and after their session and found each more than ready to answer any question I could come up with. I’m very grateful for their time and willingness to share their expertise. Thanks, guys!

I also met a couple of people that shared some of the same challenges as I’ve faced. Through those types of discussions, problems are not always solved, but new perspectives often lead to solutions or workarounds.

I had a great time and learned a ton, and the crew that put the event on did a nice job. I’m already looking forward to the next code camp and am excited about WordCamp Iowa that Kenny is organizing for early August.

It’s about as exciting as it sounds….

Backslash Technologies owner, Kevin Harter, will take on 23 other area business leaders at the Fort Madison United Way Charity Go-Cart Race. The event is going to be held at the Hill Side Go-Cart Track, at the top of Burlington Hill in Fort Madison, on Thursday, April 29th. Bring your lawn chairs, racing begins at 5:30pm and should last about two hours.

Kevin Harter is no stranger to death-defying auto racing. His legendary number 95 has worn grooves around the Lee County Speedway, a 3/8-mile dirt oval in nearby Donnellson, Iowa. While he never won any races, it wasn’t for a lack of trying. “I never tried,” admits Harter during a rare off-camera interview. “Quite frankly, I sucked at it. I was too lazy to do anything to the racecar to make it go faster and too cheap to put anything into it. Plus, it was hot in that suit and helmet. Yuck.”

Other members of Team Backslash were asked what they felt about Harter’s chances in the upcoming Celebrity Go-Cart Race.

“He’s going to embarrass us all,” commented a worried John Newkirk, Service Manager for Backslash. “I can’t believe he’s doing it.”

Backslash Service Technician, Chris Davis, seemed confused. “Race? What race?”

Luckily, even if Kevin is as terrible in a go-cart as he was in the Wild Thing four-cylinder, there’s a slight chance he could make it to the Championship Race. The top four donation collectors automatically get into the final race.

Our day started out with a lively Easter egg hunt and some laughs as *someone* kept stealing and rehiding eggs that had already been found. It took a while for the kids to figure it out… Boy, they’re dumb (just joking).

Well, we’re off to church now, followed by an Easter lunch at “Aunt Sherri’s.” Once again, have a great day and please remember the real reason for the holiday. He is risen! Praise God!

The redesign is based on WordPress which adds much-needed flexibility to the site. We’ll eventually have individual blogs for each team member in addition to a full-featured portfolio of our web development work. One of the final touches I added today was support for audio files to highlight our TechTalk podcast.

There’s still a bit of work to be done, and a few things to tweak along the way, but we decided that it was looking good enough to be published this afternoon. Stop by, take a look, and tell me what you think!

So I’m kind of looking forward to a slightly reduced pace this weekend. The two big projects I’ve been working on lately are each at a standstill as I wait for client input. Sure, I’ll piddle around with them this weekend, but I don’t have anything major planned.

Of course, I *do* have two *new* projects that I need to begin sometime soon. Plus a proposal to write, and a prospect meeting to prepare for….

Wonder where I can grab a copy of Bioshock 2? =)
