Postin' from the iPhone finally!

21 Jul

Okay, I had to relaunch the app but it’s finally working!

I’m typing this post with the brand spankin’ new WordPress app. It popped up in my RSS feed from Pinch Media and I grabbed it right away. It literally came out within the past 30 minutes and isn’t even available via Search yet!

The first two times I tried to post this, I wasn’t able to because the Save button had disappeared. So had the buttons on the bottom of the screen. But after relaunching the app, all seems well and this should be up in mere minutes.

I have already written a review on the App Store which I’m going to try to go change now. I only gave it two stars because I couldn’t post. Now that I can, I’m going to revise that review.

I’ll be writing a lot more in the near future. Stay tuned!

iPhone 3G to be sold unsubsidized as well

10 Jun

The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) has an article suggesting that the new iPhone WILL be sold unsubsidized as well.  The pricing has not been confirmed (or even set) yet, though.

This is great news to those of us that enjoy using an iPhone but do not have access to AT&T service.  They simply do not offer local numbers and, therefore, won’t allow you to sign up for their service in Southeast Iowa.  (To be honest, I wouldn’t sign up with them if I could – since we carry i wireless at Backslash.)

Let’s hope they don’t try to gouge us on the unsubsidized price.  I think that $399 for the 8GB version and $499 for the 16GB are the top end of reasonable….

[UPDATED!] $199 = $399?

09 Jun

I thought that sounded too good to be true.  It looks like the pricing of the new iPhone given at the WWDC announcement was for a new two-year contract with AT&T only.  Those of us with no ability to use AT&T (they don’t have local phone numbers or dealers in Southeast Iowa) will most likely have to pay an unsubsidized price.  I would guess that price will be around the current $400.  And that’s for the 8GB version.

I’m still interested because of all the cool new features.  But I hope I’ll be able to get a few bucks out of my current phone to help pay for this!

UPDATE:  It looks as though there is some confusion about the pricing.  iPhoneFreak.com is reporting that the $199 price is UNSUBSIDIZED, meaning that the iPhone 3G will be $100 LESS than the 8GB iPod touch!  Personally, I think they’re wrong, but you can check out the story at http://tinyurl.com/5b8tn8.

MobileMe – now THAT'S exciting!

09 Jun

Not too awfully different from Microsoft’s Mesh (in beta), Apple’s new MobileMe service is just the ticket for me. I maybe MORE excited about this than the new iPhone.  Okay, maybe not.

But it definitely is cool.  I have been looking for a seemless way to sync my calendar and contacts between my iPhone, Mac, and multiple Windows PCs.  The best way I’ve found so far is through a clunky mess of services such as Calgoo or, most recently, Google Calendar (with their new Outlook syncing tool).

The MobileMe service solves these issues and allows for email and photo syncing as well.  Oh, and don’t forget about the 20GB worth of online space that can be used to share and sync files and folders.  Cool stuff indeed!

When you update your calendar, for example, on your iPhone, the information is pushed immediately over the cell network to any other devices you have sharing the service.  Immediately.  So I can have ALL of my contacts, calendar and email shared on my Mac, my laptop, my iPhone, and my home computer.

This is way handy as I now have to manually update this devices – plug my iPhone in the dock, sync my Mac with the Google Calendar, etc. – or just do without.  Normally, I keep all of my info current on the laptop as I take it home most nights and generally sync my phone with it.  That’s a pain for those short days at the office that I just want to hop on the Mac to handle email or whatever without plugging in the laptop and waiting for Vista to load (which can be a painfully slow process).

Instead, I’ll be able to just wake up the Mac, use Mail.app (which is INFINITELY quicker than Outlook) to deal with my email, update iCal, and everything will be synced automagically with Outlook on the home computer, my iPhone and my laptop when I turn it on next.

To top all of this awesomeness off is the fact that all of this information is also available through a slick “ajaxy” Web 2.0 interface.  I can hop on a friend’s PC (or Mac, or iPhone, or Linux machine, or Wii, or PS3, or…) and pull up my personal calendar in old-fashioned Google Calendar style.

I can’t wait to spend my hard-earned money on this worthwhile service.  Now I just need to figure out a great new email address.  It’s going to be ________@me.com.  Suggestions?  Leave a comment!

EXCLUSIVE: Spy photo of the new 3G iPhone!

05 May

Unconfirmed sources say that this is indeed the first REAL photo of the upcoming 3G iPhone.  Shockingly, the photo shows a complete surprise – the new iPhone will run Microsoft’s Windows Vista!  No doubt an option to downgrade to XP will be released soon thereafter.

The new 3G iPhone finally revealed!

Downloading the iPhone SDK…slowly

21 Apr

One thing that I DEFINITELY will be installed on the Mac is the iPhone SDK.  I’m downloading it right now – and it says that it will only take another 7 HOURS and 31 MINUTES!  I feel like I’m on dial-up again!

I wonder if they are hosting the file on a Mac server….
